the Carillon

Taxi blows, and other observations

–––

Taxi blew. Hard. In coming up with the Carillon’s Top Ten Films of 2004 we agreed that yes Taxi blew, and everything else was a wild dogfight that resulted in hair pulling, name calling, and after a few drinks a touch of sexual curiosity. Not everyone agreed with each pick, and tension reigned. And through it all, we managed to assemble our list of our Top Ten Films of 2004. For the record, the adult film classic 13 Going Into 30 was number eleven.

1. Garden State: “I no longer feel insecure in my teenage-girl-crush-like-obsession with Zach Braff. Garden State showcases everything you could ask for in a film. Solid acting, incredible script and artistic directing that together, create the best movie of the year. Watching this movie is the only New Year’s Resolution you need to make this year.” (Steven)

2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: “If you could erase the memories of a relationship would you? Jim Carrey’s heart-wrenching portrayal of Joel Barish demands an Oscar nomination.” (Kent)

3. Shaun Of The Dead: “This movie is so cool that it could walk into my house, steal my stereo, make out with my mom on the kitchen table and punch me in the face with its class ring. Sure, the film is technically an inanimate object that can’t physically do all those terrible things, but somehow if it could, I’d let it slide.” (Dan)

4. Napoleon Dynamite: “A movie that has original jokes, a dance scene with a kid in moon boots, and enough quotes to get you through the next year? Sweet!” (Cassie)

5. Spiderman 2: “Spiderman 2 was amazing on every level, and as serious as it was fun. And, um, it was a comic book movie. And it pretty much kicked your ass. And you know it.” (Cassie)

6. Anchorman: “Quite possibly the crowning jewel in Will Ferrell’s career. If you did not like this film, you are either a terrorist or a cyborg.” (Steven)

7. Kill Bill Vol. 2: “Bloody, beautiful, and reminding you that David Carradine is the coolest mother around. Tarantino puts his wet dream onscreen, and what a dope wet dream.” (Dan)

8. Finding Neverland: “My pick for best picture of the year and best actor (Johnny Depp). Never have I seen a movie that made my heart bleed such raw emotion, from utter happiness to complete sorrow.” (Steven)

9. Dawn Of The Dead: “Okay, so it missed out on the social commentary of the original movie, but fast scary zombies! Chainsaws! Richard Cheese on the soundtrack!” (Cassie)

10. The Passion of the Christ: “Mel Gibson’s controversial film about the final hours of Jesus’ life is, at times, jaw-droppingly violent but through all of the violence there is still an underlying beauty and a sense of importance.” (Kent)

Actually, looking over this list, something has to be said. This list is all a big sham. Everyone had Thunderbirds at number one. We just wanted to pick these films to look cool, and considering that we have three zombie films in our top ten, mission accomplished.
