Unlike many Saturday nights, when the Lazy Owl is nothing but a barren beer hall, the evening of March 1 was a gender-bending explosion of colour and enthusiasm.
Divas at the Owl, an evening of drag king and queen entertainment, was brought to students by Gays, Bisexuals, and Lesbians at the University of Regina (GBLUR).
The large crowd for the show, estimated at more than 400 people, was a pleasant surprise for performers and organizers alike.
“It’s wonderful to see the university community is accepting of the gay community at large,” says Tim Smith, President of GBLUR.
“The night went by without [negative] incident,” he adds. This was the first time GBLUR has attempted a show of this nature.
For many in attendance, it appeared to be the first time they had seen drag kings and queens in living colour. Slack jaws and hands covering mouths were a common sight.
Nonetheless, the audience’s enthusiasm was contagious, bringing a positive vibe to the Owl that is not often present.
The best part of the night for Smith was when “I got up on stage, looked out, and saw 400 people cheering and applauding.”
Approximately $650 in proceeds from the event have already been given by GBLUR to groups such as AIDS Services South Saskatchewan, Pink Triangle Community Services, and the Lavender Club (a local social club for lesbians).
Smith says that more money will be given to charity soon. The remainder of profits will be used for various projects at GBLUR.
