by Jack Sutherland the Carillon An update from the contest that is taking the Owl by storm As another week goes by, so does another preliminary round of The Owl's Last Band Standing Competition. Last week featured a tight line-up and proved to be a real barnburner. First band up was Cordoba. The band started off rather slowly but by the time they finished up their set, the crowd loved everything that the band was throwing at them. Personally, I had never heard of Cordoba before but they quickly won me over with their brand of rock and roll. Audible Defect was next on the bill and pulled no punches with their Lit- esque style of pop-punk. Although their set was a little hit or miss, they ended on a high note with "Wingman," an ode to the best friend a guy could have. Scene darlings Geronimo followed Audible Defect with a loud and pas- sionate set that showed the jam-packed crowd at The Owl why they are Regina's buzz-band. While the band didn't seem on par with their typical intensity level, they still blazed through their set, and right on to the semi-finals. Yossarian, the final band of the night, used their allotted time to show- case their eclectic sound - and eccentric bass player - as they provided the soundtrack to end a night on - a perfect blend of loud and quiet. The crowd, and the judges, appreciated the band's sound as they moved on to the semi- finals. This week is the final week of the preliminaries, and features Sylvie, The New Weapon, Short of Skies and Anatta. |
