News: Brr it’s cold in here Sports: CIS coverage down this season

After the release of this year’s provincial budget, the student population seems, for the most part, very pleased. However, the future for Saskatchewan universities remains somewhat uncertain.
The government announced an increase for universities in Saskatchewan of $6.4 million in the form of a Centennial Grant. Both the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan are seeing this as a huge victory. The grant will, in fact, freeze tuition fees for university students in the upcoming year.

The old cliché says sometimes you need to take one step back to take two steps forward. That seems to be the perfect way to describe the television coverage the Canadian Interuniversity Sport has received.
CIS coverage decreased this year from last year as TSN did not show the women’s volleyball final, nor the women’s hockey final. Sportsnet also dropped its coverage of the men’s and women’s soccer finals.
Although there was a decrease in television coverage, there could have been worse.

It was the night punk-rock met arena-rock.
Green Day stormed the Calgary Saddledome on May 20th performing the final date of the second of many legs of their American Idiot tour to a sold-out crowd of over 14,000 screaming fans.
After taking the stage the band immediately ploughed through the first five songs (except for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” which they saved for the encore) off their latest–and best–album American Idiot.

As May winds down, I can’t help but think to myself that summer has taken a drastic swing towards adulthood and responsibility these last few years.
In the days since high school abruptly decided to cut its losses and shipped me off to university, I have come to notice that my summers have been replaced by the utter drudgery of supporting myself. Gone are the days of reckless partying, swimming at the lake and sleeping in until noon.
