Careers Day '99 congests the Riddell Centre

With 70 companies attending the 4th annual Careers Day, the hallways of the Riddell Centre were packed with businesses looking to hire graduating students.

Regan Wallin, this yearıs Careers Day co-ordinator said it was a great success.

³The employers said it was a great day. They were impressed with how things went and were thrilled with the student attendance,² said Wallin. ³It was a real rush to see all the displays going up, and our kick-off breakfast went really well, and then just the employer response throughout the day was great.²

The majority of the businesses were looking for graduates in the Administration/Business and Computer Science fields, but Wallin said that most students found the day helpful.

³Most of the students Iıd spoken to were pleased with the number of employers who were there. There are still some students who donıt think opportunities are there for them and their particular faculty, whether it be arts or computer science or whatever, but all the employers we talked to said they were very impressed with the students and they were looking at students from all different backgrounds,² said Wallin.

Bonny Tran, a first-year pre-journalism student felt that the Careers Day didnıt have much to offer her.

³I was interested in Z99, but it turned out they were just on location,² said Tran. ³They didnıt have anything for me. If you donıt know what to ask, the day is not effective.²

Sears Canada is one of the employers that hire people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Dennis Treptau, the representative from Sears, said that positions are available in most areas of retail and catalogue.

Some businesses werenıt only looking for people with degrees, but also for people with past job experience.

Colleen Whyte from the Northwest Company said positions available vary, but she hopes to find individuals who worked at their local grocery store or department store.

Although it was convenient for students and businesses to gather and exchange information, some students found the set-up crowded in the Riddell Centre.

A second-year Education student who declined to be named was feeling crowded in the Multipurpose Room where a majority of the displays were set-up.

³Itıs too crazy. The setup is really squished.²

Wallin agreed that, next year, a new floor plan may have to be considered as the Careers Day grows.

³If we keep expanding, if we keep getting more companies, we may have to consider moving it to a different location. We certainly packed the [Riddell] Centre on Wednesday. I donıt know how many more companies they could fit in there.²
