Peace activists condemn Canada's role
in world arms trade

OTTAWA (CUP) - Anti-war and peace groups are calling for more public scrutiny of Canada's role in the international arms trade after a military tradeshow was held in Ottawa last week.
Members of the Ottawa-based Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) say most Canadians don't know about their country's involvement in the small arms trade, especially when Canada is viewed as a peaceful nation.

Women graduates dominate U of R

The University of Regina has a disproportionately large number of female graduates.
In the spring semester of 1999, there were 886 female graduates and only 479 male graduates. Though the numbers seem drastic, this is not the first year that female graduates have outnumbered the males.

It was attended by over 500 students and members of the community on Thursday, September 30th.
Van Leeuwan's topic was Faith, Feminism and Family in an Age of Globalization.

US anti-abortion group set to sue UBC

VANCOUVER (CUP) - A radical anti-abortion group is getting ready to sue the University of British Columbia.
The Centre for Bio-Ethical Reform (CBC), a US-based organization, intends to file a lawsuit over what it perceives as unfair demands put on it by UBC.

Taiwanese earthquake victims

BURNABY, BC (CUP) - Even though they are nearly 10,000 kilometres away from the crisis, students in British Columbia are helping victims of last month's devastating earthquake in Taiwan.
Taiwanese student associations at the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University have collectively raised more than $10,000 to provide relief for those left homeless after the massive tremor.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (UWIRE) - A three-member U.S. Circuit Court has declared unconstitutional a school admissions policy that took race into account.
The decision declared an Arlington County, Va., kindergarten magnet school's lottery system that gives preference to black and Hispanic applicants unconstitutional.
