Women's Centre

The Womenıs Centre began its work in a cramped dingy office in the old Student Union Building.

We are now situated in a bright and inviting space in the Riddell Centre. Room 226 to be exact. No one is turned away! Our endeavor is to serve as many students as possible and to educate all students regarding gender issues. We believe that a wholesome education must reflect some thought on this subject as it is almost impossible to ignore gender issues once out in the work force. Trying to fulfill studentsı needs in other areas is also in our agenda. In 1992 a ³Needs Assessment Survey² was compiled to find out issues of importance to female students.

This survey found that women on campus were interested in a ³business-oriented centre which can assist them in career planning and job placement². Thus the Women Mentoring Women program was conceptualized.

The Women Mentoring Women (WMW) program is open to third year, fourth year and graduate female students. Students at this stage in their academic career have usually formulated a stronger career direction than those in their first or second year. If you qualify, come in and fill out an application form. We have mentors waiting for students!

Mentors and students are matched according to professional and personal interests. The logistics of the relationship are created between the mentor and student.

Questions that the student may be interested in refer to such issues as how to get around the Œold boys clubı, office and dress etiquette, interview preparation, building a portfolio, etc. The mentor may also be benficial as a job reference and may even offer some job leads.

This program is operated through fund-raising. On Thursday October 7, 1999 we are hosting a clothing sale. Professional and maternity clothing for women will be available. Childrensı clothing and toys will also be available.

Look for another sale in the Spring. We will welcome any articles that you have for sale. The event will be in the multipurpose room (beside the Lazy Owl) from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.

If you canıt make it please come to see Denise Fields, WMW Program Coordinator, at the Womenıs Centre on Thursday and Friday.
