The new building is going to mean new hours for some U of R security
guards. Pat Patton, Manager of Security at the University of Regina, is in charge of securing the new building. Primarily, that has meant adding staff. "Wešve added 36 hours of contract work," says Patton. That means an extra 36 hours of wages will be paid to patrol the entire campus, nearly equivalent to a full-time position. These extra hours will be used to patrol during late evenings and weekends. However, the addition of the extra staff has not made the building totally | secure. "There are some concerns that have been raised but it's more in the fact that the building is not yet complete," says Patton. She is waiting for the building to be completed before she can assess the building's security needs. "We're having to change our policies and procedures on a daily basis," says Patton. She does not believe the new building is a major security concern. "This is a student building and I think this is something that students will take a lot of pride in," she says. |
Thus far, this has been a quiet year for criminal activity on the
entire campus according to Patton. "On the whole this campus is very safe," she says "we havenšt had any major crimes." Patton, although pleased with the numbers, says the low statistics rmay not be totally reliable. "Crime statistics on a whole are generally deceiving because it depends on what people are reporting." She notes that many serious crimes go unreported because few people are aware of the University of Regina's security program which includes a 24 hour phone line. |
